This Saturday evening the 'Bridge go in chase of their 7th Intermediate Hurling title having won championships at this grade in 1941, 1951, 1957, 1971, 1988, 1990.
This weekends final is a repeat of the 1988 decider which saw the 'Bridge run out as 8 point winners with Brian McNamara captaining the Bridge to victory - There are plenty of similarities between the team of '88 and the boys of 2023 the main one being the mix of experience and youth.
In 1988 Mike (Bugsy) Twomey and Christy (Rusty) Chaplin started that game and later went on to play Senior championship and win All Ireland club medals with the 'Bridge. Goalkeeper Brendan Flynn also an All Ireland club winner in 1996 will be shouting on his nephew Colm while Alan Mulready will surely be hearing tales of '88 from his dad Leo (Mahony) who lined out at corner back in the '88 final.
A novelty for the kids in the 'Bridge in 1988 was to see their school teacher James Shannon leading the attack for Corofin - Mr. Shannon who was a muinteoir in 6th Class in St Finnachtas for years was instrumental in the development of hurling at underage in the club.
Another nugget is the match program cost 50p (yes thats pence) in 1988 - and yes that is also 35 years ago!!
At this time we also remember James (Ribs) Mulready and John Kelly who are no longer with us and who were vital cogs in the '88 team.
