Girls U13 double up game. 1/4 final of Cup and a league match.
Our U13 girls took on Knigh utd this morning in an unusual double up match. We were down to play in the league and also due to meet in the quarter final of the Cup, so we doubled up with the winners to take the win in both competitions.
The Ballymackey girls started well, and so, too, did Knigh making it a very tight affair in the early stages. Knigh eventually broke the deadlock when one of their lead players dribbled through a share of ours to put a fine shot past our keeper, Katie Hartnett. A brilliant shot on goals and Knigh took the lead. We had moved a few girls around position wise, notably Kate England, Lily Dunne, and Moira Meehan, so it took us a while to get used to that. We pressed Knigh plenty from here and got our reward when Caoimhe Manley was brought down in the box for a penalty. Caoimhe took an excellent spot kick to draw us level.
Maeve Quinn was causing the Knigh defence plenty of problems and was very unlucky not to score when her shot went inches wide. Lily Dunne was getting used to her position on the wing and started increasing big pressure on the Knigh defence by making dangerous runs down the line and whipping in some great ball. Holly and Moira had settled well and were now in full command at the back. Aisling Ryan had plenty of ball throughout and made some terrific passes. Eva Bailey was our player of the match the last game, and she was in the same form today, totally snuffing out any threats.
It ended 1-1 at half time, and We would play uphill in the second period. Playing uphill would suit us, though, with the energy we have! After just 2 minutes of play, our new girl Telma playing up from U12 got on the end of a ball into the box. It was 50 50 between herself and Knighs in form keeper, but Telma held her nerve and had the courage to make her shot and take it past the keeper for a brilliant. This goal came from Aisling at right back all the way through the lines until it got to Telma. A fine team goal.
Elsa Fitzgerald and Kate England were both getting lots of ball and making some very good passes to keep the pressure on Knigh. Katie had another solid game in goals, her kick outs all very good, shot stopping was excellent and very good on the back passes. Amy Keogh, although carrying a slight injury, continues to be a stand-out player for us. Her energy is incredible, and it was no surprise when she was awarded player of the match. She also scored our third goal, sealing the game.
Our girls continue to improve each week, their commitment clearly showing. We have 2 league games and Cup semi-final to look forward to!!
