Trim Shines on a Dark Evening

A fine display of attacking, fast flowing football brightened a dull wet Thursday night (25th June) in Trim when the home side comprehensively defeated Ratoath in the penultimate match in Division 6 of the football League on a 5-14 to 1-16 scoreline. Earlier in this competition it was clear that Trim had a fine collection of individual footballers but had some work to do to build a team. Their last two outings, where they scored 12-29, shows that fine team is now emerging which will challenge for honours in this year’s Championship.

From the word go Trim showed they meant business and within three minutes, on their second attack, George Douglas passed to Adam Donoghue who pointed. Veteran Owen McGrath, marked by two Ratoath defenders throughout the game, shot a brilliant two pointer one minute later. Ian Byrne extended the lead with a well taken 45 and a great move saw Adam Donoghue lay off a pass to Darragh Heffernan who pointed.

Ratoath responded with a two pointer but Trim refused to let them gain a foothold in the match and delivered two killer blows in a blistering two minute spell. The first was the end of a great move started by Adam Donoghue who passed a number of defenders released the ball to Ian Byrne who swiftly passed to Daniel Fox who made no mistake. A minute later the same player received a great pass from Owen McGrath and he again converted the opportunity.

Conor O’Sullivan, Ratoath’s best player who was marshalled excellently by Mark Murray throughout, swopped points with Neil Sweeney and the sides swopped points again in the 15th and 17th minutes. Ratoath had their best period over the next 10 minutes when they scored three points without reply. Neil Sweeney steadied the ship with a fine point and Ian Byrne added two more before Ratoath closed the scoring in the first half with a fine two pointer to leave the half time score Trim 2-10 to Ratoath 0-11

Trim showed they were not going to ease up when Owen McGrath fired in a brilliant goal within a minute of the resumption. Ratoath responded with two points but Trim extended their lead with points in the 5th (Neil Sweeney) and 10th (Ian Byrne) minutes and in the 11th minute Neil Sweeney crowned a great display with a well taken goal and a further point from Owen McGrath in the 14th minute.

The last fifteen minutes saw Ratoath score 1-3 to Josh Harris’ two points as Trim emptied their bench. Final score Trim 5-14  Ratoath 1-16.

Manager Andrew O’Brien will be pleased with the progress his team is making. This display will certainly give him heart. The defence was superb for most of the match with Cian Downes, Luca Taheny, Gary Fleming particularly prominent. Adam Donoghue was very steady at midfield and ably assisted by Daragh Heffernan and the forwards to a man were magnificent.
