Despite being depleted with only 11 players, Wicklow Rovers U14C delivered an impressive performance against Avonmore at Tullylusk this morning. The team showed great resilience and adaptability, with some players taking on unfamiliar positions.
Rovers scored the opening goal inside the first minute. They pressured the ball from the kick off and won it back immediately. Cian Collins played a precise pass to Jayden O'Malley on the left hand side. O'Malley then shot towards goal, but the ball was inadvertently diverted into his own net by the retreating defender. O'Malley then scored a brilliant individual goal on 12 minutes, dribbling past defenders, chipping over the keeper and placing the ball into the corner of the net.
Although Rovers had opportunities to add to their tally, they were unable to find the finish in the first half.
In the second half, they were tested by the strengthening wind, but goalkeeper Loukas Karamalis and the defence were solid, keeping Avonmore at bay.
The win was sealed with 4 minutes remaining when Finn Malone scored, set up by Daniel Kelly's persistence. And so it was Rovers who march on to the Trophy Semi-Finals.
This was an excellent team performance, with many players contributing to the success. Jamie McGowan was named Man of the Match for his industrious display, but several other players also stood out.
