BSJ Inters in a Classic Encounter in the Dublin Hills
The scene was set at Frank Kelly Park on Mount Venus Road for a classic encounter between two strong teams, both with big squads and both eager for a win. It was a perfect evening, with the sun lighting up the beautiful Dublin hills and forests, and barely a breath of wind. It was my first time at this ground, and I was impressed — though I couldn’t help but think I wouldn't want to spectate here on a windy, wet winter’s day. What little hair I have left would vanish in the breeze in the general direction of Lugnaquilla!
BSJ started very strong, dominating all the early play. A mix of youth and experience helped us control possession, with slick passing and skilful kick distribution. Wanders looked tired after ten minutes, chasing shadows. If we could keep up this pace, I was predicting a big win for BSJ. Thank God I never became a bookie!
The only concern was that although we were attacking well, we weren’t converting possession into enough points. We were two up after ten minutes when Wanders broke up the pitch and, against the run of play, scored a goal. That seemed to give them renewed energy. Their fading batteries were suddenly replaced by Duracell Extra, and they began winning the 50/50 ball — like young Wicklow hares, outpacing us to every breaking ball!
For a time, we continued to dominate play, and though our attacks were slick, we couldn't find the net despite some great chances and movement. On another night, we might have scored four goals, but this was Wanders’ night, and their counterattacks resulted in goals and more points. Experience counts, and while some of their players were leaving Coppers, ours were heading to nursery! They had momentum, and it only grew as the game went on.
We staged an impressive comeback in the second half, led by the experienced Sadhbh Nic Uileagóid, who showed all her underage Dublin pedigree with some beautiful points. Her grit and willpower inspired the rest of this young team to rally with her. Alas, it was too little, too late — but it showed just what this talented team is capable of. The wind picked up in the second half, which didn’t help the BSJ ladies.
Overall, it was a great contest and if the GAA had implemented my proposed rule change in 1988 (i.e.3 points for a kick over the bar and 1 for a goal) we would have won this game easily. I’ll take that. The BSJ ladies will take a lot from this game: they are a squad full of fit, strong, and skilful players with a great coaching ticket, and they will only improve as the championship approaches.
