Wednesday 26th of November saw a large crowd of all ages gather to celebrate the official opening of the extended astro facilities with associated lighting, fencing and netting at Moycarkey Borris GAA Club.

These works were made possible by the generous sports capital funding which our Club secured approximately one year ago now. The grant secured of €200,000 covered over 90% of the total costs to complete the latest round of works at the club.

Club chairman Tom Flanagan welcomed everybody and publicly acknowledged the funding provided by the Community Sports Facilities Fund approved by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.

Tom complimented Ned & JJ of Darmody Sports Turf for the quality works completed on this project and to again thank them for all their work over many years towards further enhancing and maintaining our playing facilities.

Sean Ryan of Ryan Architectural Services was acknowledged for his professionalism and vision towards the Club realising its facilities goals. Sean has professionally overseen a facilities investment of €1.25 million over the past decade, resulting in transformational change for players and supporters on and off the field in Littleton.

Tom acknowledged that these works were made possible by the generous support of all the members and supporters of Moycarkey Borris GAA Club including local business and our main sponsor H&MV Engineering. Tom also recognised the local and national grant funding that has supported all these works over the past ten years, particularly acknowledging the support of local TD Michael Lowry and local councillor Sean Ryan.

Tom concluded by thanking his fellow officers and in particular the work of John Corcoran and Laurenz Egan towards realising the shared goals of the club.

Fr Tom Fogarty then led the assembled crowd in a blessing for this sports facility before Club President Liam Hennessey was called upon to cut the ribbon to mark the occasion.

Our club chairman noted that Liam was called upon ten years previously to turn the sod on the very ground that the crowd were gathered at on this evening and Tom acknowledged our president as one of the greatest supporters this club has been fortunate to call their own. Liam has been involved in every part of this club all his life on and off the pitch and tonight we celebrate with Liam another great occasion for our club. It is hoped that this facility will further assist the development of all our players male and female for years to come. The event concluded with refreshments in the Men’s Shed meeting room.
