In a thoroughly entertaining end-to-end encounter, Wicklow Rovers secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over St Anthony’s.
Rovers started brightly and took the lead with a superbly worked team goal. Excellent passing and movement carved open the St Anthony’s defence, with Tom Keating providing the clinical finish to make it 1-0.
St Anthony’s responded well and levelled the score at 1-1, setting up a nip-and-tuck battle for the remainder of the game as both sides traded attacks in an open contest.
The decisive moment came in the second half when the relentless Hugh Delahunt epitomised the Rovers spirit. He hunted down every ball and won a vital free-kick in a dangerous area. Tom Keating stepped up and dispatched it perfectly, scoring the winner and completing his brace to make it 2-1 to Rovers.
The whole team was a credit, but huge praise goes to Lee Jameson for a magnificent goal-saving header late on that helped preserve the lead and secure the three points.
A great team performance and an excellent win on the road. Well done to St Anthony’s for their part in a very good game.
Keep roving!
