Round 5 of the senior county camogie championship took place this evening with Ahane taking on Granagh/Ballingarry in Ballingarry. Throw in was 5pm and from the start there was timber flying as both teams hit the ground running. Within the first three minutes Niamh Mulcahy had scored a point and Orla Curtin scored a great goal. Soon after Orla's goal Aine Reynolds was at the end of a wonderful piece of play that started in the half back line with Judith Mulcahy who played the ball to Ann Kennedy in midfield, who played it to Orla, who gave a beautiful pass to Aine who finished it into the net. Not to be out done Granagh/Ballingarry came back down the field and scored a goal and a point for themselves. Ten minutes into the first half and the score stood at Ahane 2-1 Granagh/Ballingarry 1-1. There was some great pieces of blocking and hooking from both sides with neither side giving each other an inch. Granagh/Ballingarry scored a 45 after a save from Ahane goalkeeper Sile Moynihan. Points came again from Niamh and Aoife Quiinn got her name on the score sheet with a point in the 16th minute. Ahane lost centre half back Judith Mulcahy to injury in the 23rd minute, Marguerita McCarthy came on to replace Judith. It was great to see Mags back on the field of play after a long time on the sidelines due to injury. Roisin O'Mara scored Ahane's sixth point of the second half meaning the teams went in at half time on a score line of Ahane 2-6 Granagh/Ballingarry 1-5
Granagh/Ballingarry were first to get a score in the second half with a point coming from a 45. Niamh Mulcahy got Ahane's first score of the second half and then went on to score a goal in the 9th minute of the half, the goal came from a long ball in where it dropped in under the bar. The Ahane defensive lines were solid in the second half with great defending coming from Rose Collins, Sarah Crotty, Kate Herbert, Niamh Martin, Niamh Power, and Noreen Flanagan. Granagh/Ballingary scored one more point in the second half but could not get through to get a goal. Niamh scored four more points in the second half meaning the game ended on a scoreline of Ahane 3-11 to Granagh/Ballingarry 1-7.
Well done to our girls on an excellent win tonight meaning they now play Newcastle West in the County Championship Semi Final next Saturday at 4pm in the Bog Garden Rathkeale.
