Under 13C Championship v Broadford
September 9th 2019 @ Eire Og GAA Club
Score : Eire Og Camogie 10-4 Broadford 1-3
Eire Og’s Under 13 girls got their quest to atone for last year’s final defeat off to a perfect start with a comprehensive win over Broadford on Monday night at the Eire Og Grounds.
The hosts made a fast start with a Sarah Broderick goal in the second minute. Broderick gained possession near the end line and forced her way through the defence to hand pass calmly to the net. This was followed from the 7th minute by a flurry of Eire Og scores which effectively put the game to bed. First, Kate Talty goaled and from the restart Rachel Russell added a point which she topped off by scoring a great goal to leave Eire Og in front 3-1 to 0-0 after ten minutes.
Broadford then began to settle into the game and an excellent free from distance saw them open their account. However, the resurgence was short-lived as Eire Og attacked again and Ciara Hickey got on the end of a high ball across the visiting defence and expertly doubled on the ball to find the net. Broadford were stuggling to clear their lines at this stage and sustained pressure started to tell as twice in quick succession Rachael Russell gained possession from clearances and goaled to stretch her side’s lead further.
The visitors started to push forward with more purpose and were rewarded when pressure on the Eire Og defence led to a turnover near the goal. An excellent shot found the home net but this only seemed to rally the Town side as they exerted immediate pressure on the Broadford defence which yielded two more goals just before half time from Russell again and Annie Lynch, and the break arrived with the score 8-1 to 1-1.
After a raft of half time changes the second half began quietly before Niamh McManus rifled a low ground shot to the net in the 5th minute. Broadford responded with some pressure on the Town backs who defended well and only conceded a pointed free during this period. The siege was lifted and after some great work from Aideen O’Donohue at corner back and Liadan Ni Ghlaisne at wing forward Eire Og added two points to their tally with points from Rachel Russell and Annie Lynch.
Aoife Moylan then set up Lynch for another point before a Broadford free ended the scoring for the visitors. From the puck out Eire Og attacked again and Rachel Russell goaled with the last puck of the game to leave the final score Eire Og 10-04 to Broadford’s 1-03.
It was an encouraging start for Eire Og. They were strong all over the pitch and it was excellent to see all those introduced during the game having an impact on proceedings, while it was especially pleasing to see six different players on the scoresheet on the night.
