The BSJ Senior Camogie team took to the field on Tuesday night against St Vincent's - the reigning Leinster champions. Preparation has been less than ideal with new team management starting only 3 weeks ago. But the sun was shining, the pitch was in fantastic shape and the mood in the camp was good. If every journey starts with the first step, this game seemed like a first step on a new journey for this team.
BSJ gave everything in the first half with gutsy performances right through the field. No Vinnies ball was lifted without pressure, tackles were coming in thick and fast. No space. No quarter given. Bodies everywhere. It. Was. Epic. Scores were swapped and Vincent's realised this would be no walk in the park. BSJ ended the half 3 points down and, but for some errant striking, could have been level.
The second half was an epic battle. BSJ put it up to Vinnies time and again. Vinnies responded, then BSJ pulled them back in. Bodies on the line, goals followed by counter-goals. Points followed by counter-points. Fast, courageous, free-flowing Camogie. This was edge of the seat stuff. With 5 minutes to play BSJ drew level. But Vinnies responded like true champions and notched up a further goal and 2 points to win out by 4-6 to 4-11. An absolutely enthralling game of Camogie that we will take great lessons from for the rest of the league.
Special thanks to the minors who joined the senior team tonight and were absolutely fantastic. The future of Camogie looks bright in orange.
