Senior Hurling League Division 3: Boardsmill 3-15 Longwood 1-17
Longwood’s hurlers may have suffered a second consecutive league defeat, this time at the hands of Boardsmill, but there were certainly more optimistic signs than in their previous outing.
A poor first half performance was followed by a much improved second half which saw the boys outscore their hosts by ten points.
Despite the ongoing absence of the spine of their team due to county commitments, Longwood were able to welcome back Gavin Griffith, Conor Dixon and Brian Stagg and this trio brought much needed energy and industry to bear on the game, particularly in the second period.
Longwood will rue the concession of avoidable goals in the opening half, scores which eventually proved decisive.
But the second half demonstrated what the team is capable of and if they can build on this and improve further they may still have a say in the remainder of the league.
Longwood: Mark Kennedy, David Coloe, Adam Leacy, Thomas Dorran, Sam King, Bob Maguire, Conor M Dixon (0-1), Brian Stagg (0-1), Gavin Griffith, Anthony Healy (0-11), Conor Dixon, Ryan Moore (1-4), Ben McLoughlin, Joey Stenson, Ross Healy. Subs: Malachy Fisher for Sam King, Luke Brady for Thomas Dorran, Kevin Maguire for Ross Healy
The hurlers next fixture will be a home game against St Fechin’s on May 3rd.
Before then, the big ball takes over – our second team travel to Ballinacree on Tuesday evening to play St Brigid’s while our first team host St Colmcille’s next Sunday morning.
