Senior Hurling League, Div 1, Round 4.
Final Score: Ratoath 1-14; Trim 1-16
Trim made it three wins on the bounce and put themselves firmly in the picture for League honours, when they made the successful trip to Sean Eiffe Park on Saturday last. A competitive affair is always expected when these fierce rivals are pitted together and Saturday’s encounter did not disappoint in that regard.
Cian Rodgers had a very early score for the hosts but by the end of the first quarter Trim had forged ahead 0-6 to 0-2, thanks to points from David Murtagh (0-4,2f), James Andrews, and Conor McKeown. A Ratoath point came courtesy of a Oisin Cashman free, he had earlier converted a ’65, before the energetic Conor Mc Keown raised a green flag for the visitors. Ratoath’s response, however, was spontaneous with a similar effort from Jack McGowan and they finished out the half with four unanswered points between the twenty sixth and thirty minutes.
A fine solo effort by Gary Fleming and another from George Douglas kept Trim in the ascendancy and they held their two point advantage before referee Martin Dawson sounded the half-time whistle.
Half Time: Ratoath 1-7; Trim 1-9
Another early Ratoath point, from a Oisin Cashman free, reduced the margin to one, before a James Andrews conversion, following a fine run and pass by Danny Coleman, restored Trim’s advantage. What David Murtagh was achieving for Trim, with another couple of pointed efforts, Oisin Cashman was emulating for Ratoath. In all, he converted Ratoath’s entire second half scores with all seven points coming from dead balls (6f, 1’65). Four of those scores, between the twelfth and nineteenth minutes were unanswered by the visitors and, for the first time, since the initial score, Ratoath had edged in front with just over ten minutes remaining.
This signalled a major Trim resurgence and they helped themselves to four unanswered points courtesy of George Douglas and the infatigable David Murtagh (2f,1’65). Oisin Cashman had the honour of the final score but it was a case of too little too late with Trim running out as well deserved winners by a two point margin.
Overall, this was a fine Trim team performance and augers well for the remaining League fixtures and much anticipated start of the Championship in the not too distant future.
