Under warm Ridgewood skies, St. Finian’s u11 girls welcomed Naomh Mearnóg for their final LGFA fixtures before the summer break — and both clubs delivered a brilliant display of skill, teamwork, and sporting spirit. From the first whistle to the final kick, the matches were full of energy, with competitive edge tempered by great respect between the teams.
The game saw both sides trading scores early on, with Naomh Mearnóg showing slick passing and solid movement, while St. Finian’s countered with strong defending and clever link play through the middle. As the game settled, moments of individual brilliance stood out — a few fine points from distance, brave blocks, and some excellent goalkeeping at both ends.
Despite the intensity, there was a clear sense of enjoyment on the pitch. Coaches and supporters praised the effort and attitude of all the players, with plenty of encouragement ringing out from the sidelines. Both sides made full use of their squads, giving everyone a chance to shine and finish the first half of the season on a high.
By the final whistle, the girls were exhausted and after elbow-bumps and "GG's' were exchanged, all girls on both clubs were grateful recipients of ice-pops for their efforts
Thanks to Naomh Mearnóg for travelling, to all the volunteers and mentors for making it happen, and to the players for a thoroughly entertaining afternoon. Enjoy the break – and we look forward to more great football in the second half of the season!
Finally, a parting word to our mascot "Kevin the Carrot". He sets off for pastures new soon and will be greatly missed by the girls
