The late Des Ward
Mullingar Shamrocks members and executive extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late Des Ward, Kilpatrick Manor, Ballinea, Mullingar. In particular, sympathy is extended to his wife Nuala and his sons Barry and Alan, his grandchildren Josh, Luke, Adam, Rebecca, Jordan and Yasmin, daughters-in-law Pauline and Angela, his brother Damian, and members of his extended family.
Des reposes at Shaw’s Funeral Home, Bishopsgate Street on Monday, 11 August from 4.00 pm concluding with prayers at 6.00 pm followed by removal to Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar arriving at 6.30 pm. Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning at 11.00 am followed by burial in Ballyglass Cemetery.
Des was a native of Mayo, where the Ward family has a distinguished record of involvement in the county’s GAA affairs, and had the privilege of being in Croke Park in 1951 on the last occasion Mayo won the All-Ireland title. Unfortunately, Des was also in Croke Park to witness several of the Mayo All-Ireland losses. However, nothing in GAA gave Des more satisfaction than watching his grandson Jordan shred defences wearing the green and white of Mullingar Shamrocks. In fact, for personal satisfaction, Des rated that 2018 county final victory ahead of that historic Mayo victory of 1951.
