Under 14. Division 2 semi-final: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-9 Inny Shamrocks 2-5.
Our Under-14 footballers took to the field in a sun-drenched Springfield on Wednesday evening and played a strong Inny Shamrocks side in the semi-final of the Under-14 Division 2 championship. Great credit is due to Davy Gavin and the community employment scheme workers for keeping the pitch in such good condition given the frequency of games and training in Springfield. Inny Shamrocks are a formidable side and inflicted the only loss on Shamrocks in the group stages. Some of their key players were recipients of the Westmeath Examiner awards last week.
A great goal in the minutes before the interval scored by Carl Keane was instrumental in Shamrocks going in at half-time just a handful of points down. The move that resulted in the goal began with goalkeeper Kaedon Govender and continued with a series of passes that ended with Karl shooting to the net. Inny Gaels responded with a point to leave the interval score reading 1-5 to 1-3.
The boys gave a spirited performance with the wind in the second half to run out winners by 4 points. The movement, tackling, intensity and fielding were top notch and the large attendance thoroughly enjoyed two well drilled sides’ performances. Indeed, a remarkable save in the closing minutes by Kaedon Govender was the ultimate decisive moment. This group has shown a consistent improvement as the year went on which can only be put down to good coaching and their hard work on the training ground. This result has secured a spot in the final against Coralstown-Kinnegad in over a week’s time.
The boys that togged out were: Kaedon Govender, Oisín McNamee, Aaron Smith, Caolán Murphy, Donnacha Doyle, Dylan Conlon, Dylan Hanly, Evan Palmer, Gavin Mooney, James Casey, Jamie Byrne, Josh Burke, Paul Donlon, Jessie Mbiachare, John Cleary, Pau Dooley, Sean Dooley, Conor Glynn, Carl Keane, Eddie Leavy, Kian Newcombe, Eoin Reddin, Harry McLoughlin, Cian McNamee, Cian Heffernan, Rory Regan and Conor Kinehan.
