Congratulations to our club man Matthew Murphy who lined out at Centre Forward for the St Flannans L-Z first year team who were crowned county hurling champions this week.
St Flannans (L-Z) 4-15 St Flannans (A-K) 4-12 On Monday at a sun drenched Clareabbey the final of the Clare Post Primary Schools 1st Year Hurling competition took place in front of a large crowd of Parents, Students and Teachers. At the start of the year St Flannans picked 2 panels based on surnames namely the A-K team and the L-Z team.
Tony Kelly was manager of the A-K team which lined out in White while Jamsie O'Connor managed the L-Z team which wore Blue. Both teams were unbeaten coming into the final after topping their groups following 3 group games and a semi final and they had also played weekly internal games throughout the season with the A-K team coming out on top on each occasion so they deservedly bore the favorites tag.
The A-Ks started the game at a blistering pace and hit 2 early goals which were eventually clawed back and they lead 2-08 to 2-06 at the short whistle. Following some motivational words from Jamsie the L-Zs came thundering into the game and when Conor Long completed his hat trick of goals it was enough to see out the win for the L-Z team by 3 points.
Well done to both sides on a high quality final and thanks to all the teachers (Mr Breen, Mr Kelly, Mr Donellan, Mr. O'Connor, Mr. Brohan) who give up their time in coaching the boys after school and instilling a love for the game in these young hurlers.
