Newmarket hosted Éire Óg in round 6 of the u14B championship on Sunday evening. Conditions, both underfoot and overhead could only be described as perfect. Luckily, a little bit of evening coolness had crept in to allow the teams play without the energy sapping intense heat that prevailed earlier in the day. The sides had a well matched opening ten minutes with play ebbing & flowing before Chloe Barry eventually got the townies off the mark from a placed ball. Emer Murray, who bossed mid field throughout the match, caught a lovely ball from Laura Walsh at full back, soloed the length of the field and split the posts to put her side two points up. Buoyed by the advantage, Éire Óg drove on and notched up a further 4 points with no reply. It was 18 minutes into the half before the Blues finally made their mark after a strong attack resulted in a well taken point. Caroline Enright followed up with a point from a free to bring the deficit back to 4 points. Indeed, the gap may have been smaller had it not been for the heroics of Éire Óg net minder, Shannon Hegarty, who pulled off two excellent saves. A pointed ’45 from Chloe Barry along with a Phoebe Boateng point from play, however, gave the visitors a 6 point advantage at the break.

The match was effectively over as a contest before three minutes had fully elapsed in the second half. A Chloe Barry free fell short of its’ target but Phoebe Boateng reacted well, raising the first green flag of the evening. Within thirty seconds, she had repeated the feat. Half forward, Jodie Russell, who put in an outstanding performance all evening, fed a lovely ball into the full forward line which resulted in Ella Cahill striking to the Newmarket net. She, also, followed up with a second goal. Undaunted by this turn of events, the Blues rallied and once again, Caroline Enright, did her side proud notching up a tally of 1-03.  Further scores from Chloe Barry & Emer Murray, however, saw the Ennis girls deservedly take the points on a final scoreline of 5-12 to 1-06. Éire Óg, who sit jointly at the top of the league table with St Josephs, will host Sixmilebridge on Wednesday evening in the last round game while Newmarket travel to Clarecastle.
