Half time score : Éire Óg 1-02 Sixmilebridge 1-02
Full Time score : Éire Óg 4-06 Sixmilebridge 2-03
A storming second half display paved the road to a 4-06 to 2-03 victory for Éire Óg when they faced Sixmilebridge in the u14B cup final on Wednesday evening in Tulla.
Both sides were slow to settle in the nervy, tension filled opening minutes of the first half, with two Sixmilebridge wides getting them off to a shaky start. Éire Óg were first to get the scoreboard ticking over as full forward, Phoebe Boateng, grabbed a goal in the sixth minute of play. Both sets of defenders carried out their duties well, with scoring attempts being thwarted for both teams. It was a further ten minutes before another flag was raised, this time a white one, as Chloe Barry pointed for the Townies. Amy Russell, followed up with an excellent point to give her side a 5 point lead with just five minutes remaining in the half. The ‘Bridge, however, were not about to let Éire Óg have it all their own way and had levelled matters by the time the referee blew the half time whistle with a goal and a point from Jessica Williams, while Rose Young got the equalising score from a placed ball.
A much more determined Éire Óg side emerged in the second half and they had a dream start with goals from Ella Cahill and Karolina Lis in the opening minutes of play. A Jodie Russell point gave her side a seven point advantage before Alishe Roche brought the deficit back to four with a well taken goal. This was quickly cancelled out as Jodie Russell executed a perfect pass to substitute, Aoibheann Hahessy, who sent an unstoppable shot to the back of the Sixmilebridge net. The Bridge had a glimmer of hope of a comeback as they were awarded a penalty, but, the shot was saved by Amy Russell and cleared down the pitch to the capable hands of half forward Chloe Barry who scored her second point of the match. The Bridge fought hard and Éire Óg netminder, Shannon Hegarty and her full back line were in constant action. Chloe Barry made a great run through the Bridge defence only to be denied by Alana Swire in the Bridge goal. Barry converted the resultant ’45 and followed this up with a point from play. Time was nearly up and the last score of the match came from a pointed free from the stick of Rose Young for the ‘Bridge. This was a fabulous team effort on behalf of the Éire Óg girls. It would be impossible to pick out a Player of the Match as every girl left all they had on the pitch, when it seemed they had nothing left in the reserves, they dug deep and gave more ! Éire Óg captain, Amy Russell, proudly accepted the U14B cup on behalf of her team mates from Clare Camogie Boards’ Denise Brookes.
