Miltown 5-4 Eire Og 2-07
The old adage that goals win games certainly proved true as Miltown began their 2026 Cusack Cup campaign with victory over Eire Og at Hennessy Memorial Park on friday evening.
The opening exchanges were cagey as both sides prodded the opposing defences and got to terms with a tricky cross field wind blowing into the John Reidy Stand. The visitors opened the scoring after eight minutes with a point from play , Miltown however replied with two goals , the first from Euan Lineen after good build up work from Brian Curtin and Darragh McDonagh and Darragh himself got in on the act with a cracking finish for the second. Eire Og replied with two points in a row with Miltown missing a number of point chances before a Cian Mahony free left 3 between the sides after 25 minutes. An eire Og goal after 27 minutes left the score line Miltown 2-01 Eire Og 1-03 as the sides headed for the dressing rooms.
Miltown began the second half in blistering form and had a further 1-1 on the scoreboard after 2 minutes with a point from Gordon Kelly and a Brian Curtin goal after some great interchange of passes. Eire Og reduced the deficit quickly with a goal of their own after 5 minutes before Darragh McDonagh again found the back of the visitors net with a smart finish after 9 minutes as the goals continued to flow. Eire Og knocked over 2 points before Euan Lineen added to the Miltown goal tally with an impressive effort after 15 minutes giving Miltown a lead of 5-02 to 2-05 as the game entered the final quarter. Eire Og added a further two points with Miltown adding two of their own from Cian Mahony frees in the 20th & 29th minutes rounding off a fine Miltown win.
