Junior Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 3.09 The Downs 2.13

St Lomans and The Downs played out a thriller in the Junior Championship in Molloy Park on Tuesday evening last. Both teams were in front at different stages of the game, but it was the home side who finished one-point winners, a result that leaves them in pole position to reach the knockout stages of the championship.

The Downs raced into a three-point lead in as many minutes played. Chris Gilbert levelled the game with a well taken goal after been set up by Garrett Hickey, while a Daniel Sheridan catch out the field started the move. Points from Tristan Graham and Garrett hickey soon followed before Conan O Hara got the blues second goal with a wonderful finish to the net.

The Downs had the better of the second quarter and outscored the blues with a number of points while two goals including one from Jimmy Conroy swung the lead back in their favour. Daniel Sheridan, Chris Gilbert and Eoghan O Keeffe points kept St Lomans in touch with just a single point between the teams at the break.

The home side kicked three points in the opening ten minutes of the second half while Garrett Hickey pointed for the blues first score of the half. Hickey and Shane Flynn linked up soon after to set up Chris Gilbert for his second goal to level the game. Gilbert fisted over for a point soon after to give the blues the lead.

It was a thrilling final quarter with Garrett Hickey and Chris Gilbert scoring points for St Lomans, but the home side kicked four of their own including a 45m free to give them a one-point lead. The Blues battled hard in the closing minutes to get an equaliser and they would rue a few missed scoring opportunities dropping short and into the goalkeeper’s hands, as The Downs held on for a win by the narrowest of margins.
