Minor Ladies Championship:

St Loman’s Mullingar 3-13 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-08

It took two ten-minute periods of extra time to separate St Loman’s and Mullingar Shamrocks in Springfield last Sunday morning. Annie Graham got the first score with a well-taken point. Shamrocks responded with two points before the Blues equalised through Niamh McGinley. Shamrocks struck a blow before half-time when Mia Gilligan found the net and pointed shortly afterwards to extend their lead to four points at half-time. It must be said that Loman’s were well on top in the opening half but could not show their dominance on their scoreboard.

The Hosts started the Second half brighter and added two points after the break to give them a six-point lead. Vicky Carr opened her account with a free but when Shamrocks found the net for a second time, the Saints looked dead and buried at nine points down. However, this group of players’ never-say-die attitude shone through. Vicky Carr’s two excellent points reduced the deficit to seven points. The turning point of the match would come via the substitute’s bench, Caoimhe Kilmurray’s mazy run put her one on one with the shamrocks goalkeeper and she finished expertly with a low shot into the bottom left corner. The Blues got to within a point when Vicky Carr’s shot creeped underneath the crossbar to level the match. Carr was phenomenal in the second half and her driving runs from midfield resulted in a further two points to put the visitors ahead, Loman’s had scored 2-04 on the trot at this point. Shamrocks replied with a last-gasp point to bring the game into extra time.

The Blues were wonderful in extra time and Vicky Carr’s superhuman fitness personified this. Carr’s three points from placed balls put the Saints in the driving seat before Shamrocks reduced the gap to two points Half time of extra time. Carr was at it again in the final period and when she struck her second goal into the back of the Shamrocks net, the Saints were well and truly in control. Annie Kilmurray capped an excellent performance in midfield with a late point to give the Blues a six-point cushion. Evie Daly’s fine long-range point at the death was the insurance point as the Blues ran out seven-point winners. Referee Jim Rock blew the full-time whistle and Ellen Kilmurray was presented with the cup as Loman’s reigned supreme in Springfield.

In truth, St Loman’s were wonderful all over the pitch, with all twenty players working their socks off. In defence Emma Keena, Keelie Mulderry and skipper Ellen Kilmurray were fantastic. Up front Annie Graham, Niamh McGinley and Renee McTiernan worked tirelessly. Substitute Caoimhe Kilmurray was a bundle of energy when introduced. However, Vicky Carr was undoubtedly player of the match, who’s personal tally of 2-09 was outrageous. A big well done to all these players, many of whom have come out on the wrong side of finals in previous years and it’s only right that they’ve finally gotten their name on some silverware. Finally huge thanks to Alan Graham, Donal Kilmurray and Alan Quinn for devoting their time to the Ladies over the course of the season.
